# Who runs the frontier labs

Special Research Report · Steckler Lab Research · September 5, 2026

Public-source reconstruction of leadership and governance. Functional grouping does not imply reporting lines. Reported roles are labeled. The original 12-slide PowerPoint remains unchanged.

## OpenAI

Separate the Foundation’s control rights from the operating company’s research, product, and revenue leadership.

OpenAI Foundation controls OpenAI Group PBC through board-appointment rights. Bret Taylor chairs the Foundation. Zico Kolter serves on the Foundation board and observes the Group board without a vote; the two boards are not identical.

[OpenAI — Our structure](https://openai.com/our-structure/); [OpenAI — David Vélez and Robin Vince join both boards](https://openai.com/index/david-velez-robin-vince-join-openai-boards/)

### Executive leadership

### Security

- **Dane Stuckey** — CISO appointment; current scope not freshly confirmed. Historical appointment. [TechCrunch — Dane Stuckey joins OpenAI security leadership](https://techcrunch.com/2024/10/15/former-palantir-ciso-dane-stuckey-joins-openai-to-lead-security/)

Explicit relationship: OpenAI Foundation → OpenAI Group board (Appoints and can replace directors). [OpenAI — Our structure](https://openai.com/our-structure/)

Foundation directors: Bret Taylor, Sam Altman, Adam D’Angelo, Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Nicole Seligman, Paul Nakasone, Zico Kolter, Adebayo Ogunlesi, plus July appointees David Vélez and Robin Vince. The older structure page omits those two additions; the later appointment notice resolves that discrepancy. [OpenAI — Our structure](https://openai.com/our-structure/); [OpenAI — David Vélez and Robin Vince join both boards](https://openai.com/index/david-velez-robin-vince-join-openai-boards/)

Fidji Simo stepped down from full-time leadership in July; Brad Lightcap announced his departure in August. Treat these as dated transitions, not evidence that every former direct report now reports to Brockman. [TechCrunch — Fidji Simo steps down](https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/09/fidji-simo-steps-down-from-openais-no-2-role/); [Axios — Brad Lightcap is leaving OpenAI](https://www.axios.com/2026/08/11/openai-executive-brad-lightcap-is-leaving)

Chen and Pachocki hold different research titles. “Dual research heads” is a useful shorthand, but the sources do not establish equal budgets or an exact division of every team. [OpenAI — Leadership updates](https://openai.com/index/leadership-updates-march-2025/); [OpenAI — Jakub Pachocki appointed Chief Scientist](https://openai.com/index/jakub-pachocki-announced-as-chief-scientist/)

## Anthropic

Dario sets research direction; Daniela manages the executive organization. The Trust appoints directors rather than running the lab.

Daniela Amodei chairs the board. Its April roster includes Dario Amodei, Yasmin Razavi, Jay Kreps, Reed Hastings, Chris Liddell, and Vas Narasimhan. With Narasimhan’s appointment, Trust-appointed directors became a board majority.

- **Tino Cuéllar** — Chief Global Affairs Officer. Primary source. [Anthropic — Tino Cuéllar joins global affairs, leaves Trust](https://www.anthropic.com/news/tino-cuellar)

Explicit relationship: Long-Term Benefit Trust → Anthropic board (Appoints a majority of directors). [Anthropic — Narasimhan appointment; Trust-appointed board majority](https://www.anthropic.com/news/narasimhan-board)

Explicit relationship: Daniela Amodei → Tino Cuéllar (Confirmed direct reporting relationship). [Reuters — Cuéllar reports to Daniela Amodei](https://www.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/anthropic-names-global-affairs-chief-to-tackle-ai-policy-as-trump-tensions-persist-4835312)

The company says Daniela manages the executive team. That does not independently establish the deck’s absolute claim that Dario has exactly one direct report. [Anthropic — Leadership](https://www.anthropic.com/company/leadership)

Do not list Jason Matheny or Paul Christiano as current trustees: they left in December 2023 and April 2024. Kanika Bahl and Zach Robinson left in January 2026. Cuéllar left the Trust for his executive role in August. Its older overview and later notices must be read together. [Anthropic — Long-Term Benefit Trust, including membership footnotes](https://www.anthropic.com/news/the-long-term-benefit-trust); [Anthropic — Tino Cuéllar joins global affairs, leaves Trust](https://www.anthropic.com/news/tino-cuellar)

Neil “Buddy” Shah is identified as Trust chair; Richard Fontaine and Ben Bernanke are identified in subsequent membership updates. A complete post-Cuéllar trustee roster is not established here. Neither the board nor the Trust belongs in the employee reporting hierarchy. [Anthropic — Narasimhan appointment; Trust-appointed board majority](https://www.anthropic.com/news/narasimhan-board); [Anthropic — Long-Term Benefit Trust, including membership footnotes](https://www.anthropic.com/news/the-long-term-benefit-trust)

## SpaceXAI / xAI

Parent-company executives, AI operating leadership, and Tesla collaborators are three different categories.

SpaceX acquired xAI on February 2, 2026. The June prospectus names Elon Musk, Gwynne Shotwell, and Bret Johnsen as executive officers and documents Musk’s voting control. The SpaceXAI branding followed in July.

[xAI — xAI joins SpaceX](https://x.ai/news/xai-joins-spacex); [SpaceX — June 5 European prospectus](https://content.spacex.com/cms-assets/FINAL_Documents%20and%20Updates/SpaceX%20-%20EU%20Prospectus%20%28Approved%20by%20Bafin%29%20-%20June%205%2C%202026.pdf); [Techzine — xAI officially becomes SpaceXAI](https://www.techzine.eu/news/applications/142728/xai-officially-becomes-spacexai-five-months-after-merger/)

### SpaceX corporate leadership

- **Elon Musk** — CEO and controlling shareholder. Primary source. [SpaceX — June 5 European prospectus](https://content.spacex.com/cms-assets/FINAL_Documents%20and%20Updates/SpaceX%20-%20EU%20Prospectus%20%28Approved%20by%20Bafin%29%20-%20June%205%2C%202026.pdf)
- **Gwynne Shotwell** — President and COO. Primary source. [SpaceX — June 5 European prospectus](https://content.spacex.com/cms-assets/FINAL_Documents%20and%20Updates/SpaceX%20-%20EU%20Prospectus%20%28Approved%20by%20Bafin%29%20-%20June%205%2C%202026.pdf)
- **Bret Johnsen** — CFO. Primary source. [SpaceX — June 5 European prospectus](https://content.spacex.com/cms-assets/FINAL_Documents%20and%20Updates/SpaceX%20-%20EU%20Prospectus%20%28Approved%20by%20Bafin%29%20-%20June%205%2C%202026.pdf)

### AI operations

- **Michael Nicolls** — President of the AI business; appointed in spring 2026. Reported. [Bloomberg — Inside the identity crisis at Musk’s AI company](https://news.bloomberglaw.com/antitrust/inside-the-identity-crisis-at-elon-musks-chatbot-company)

Explicit relationship: SpaceX → xAI / SpaceXAI (Corporate acquisition, February 2026). [xAI — xAI joins SpaceX](https://x.ai/news/xai-joins-spacex)

Reporting describes Shotwell helping oversee AI operations and Johnsen taking on AI finance. Nicolls’s operating position should not be confused with the parent’s CEO role. The prospectus does not provide an AI researcher-by-researcher chart. [Benzinga — SpaceX operators join xAI oversight (Bloomberg reporting)](https://www.benzinga.com/markets/prediction-markets/26/05/52701303/elon-musks-raid-why-tesla-lieutenants-are-shuffling-to-xai); [SpaceX — June 5 European prospectus](https://content.spacex.com/cms-assets/FINAL_Documents%20and%20Updates/SpaceX%20-%20EU%20Prospectus%20%28Approved%20by%20Bafin%29%20-%20June%205%2C%202026.pdf)

The departure of the non-Musk founding team is widely reported. This is a historical talent-flow event, not a current leadership roster. The report avoids recreating obsolete product-team ownership after those departures. [Fast Company — Inside the xAI exodus](https://www.fastcompany.com/91531084/inside-the-xai-exodus)

The deck’s Brian Bjelde, Jared Birchall, Ashok Elluswamy, and Anno van den Akker entries do not establish a single employee hierarchy. Their exact current AI-unit authority and reporting lines are held out of the confirmed map. Shared leadership or collaboration does not make Tesla a SpaceX subsidiary. [SpaceX — June 5 European prospectus](https://content.spacex.com/cms-assets/FINAL_Documents%20and%20Updates/SpaceX%20-%20EU%20Prospectus%20%28Approved%20by%20Bafin%29%20-%20June%205%2C%202026.pdf); [Benzinga — SpaceX operators join xAI oversight (Bloomberg reporting)](https://www.benzinga.com/markets/prediction-markets/26/05/52701303/elon-musks-raid-why-tesla-lieutenants-are-shuffling-to-xai)

## Google DeepMind

The August memo separates operating and scientific leadership.

The August 5 memo assigns Kavukcuoglu the operating remit, reporting to Pichai. Hassabis retains Isomorphic Labs alongside his new scientific role.

- **Lila Ibrahim** — Chief AI Readiness Officer. Primary source. [Team4Tech — Lila Ibrahim biography](https://team4tech.org/people/lila-ibrahim/)

Explicit relationship: Sundar Pichai → Koray Kavukcuoglu (Direct report; SVP of Google DeepMind). [Google — The next chapter of our AI momentum](https://blog.google/company-news/inside-google/message-ceo/next-chapter-ai-momentum/)

Kavukcuoglu’s remit spans Gemini models, frontier research, and app/developer teams. The memo does not publish a full subordinate roster. [Google — The next chapter of our AI momentum](https://blog.google/company-news/inside-google/message-ceo/next-chapter-ai-momentum/)

Discovery Loop lists four former Google founders. Shazeer’s OpenAI move and Jumper’s Anthropic move are separately reported. [Discovery Loop — Founders and approach](https://www.discoveryloop.com/); [Axios — Noam Shazeer leaves Google for OpenAI](https://www.axios.com/2026/06/18/noam-shazeer-google-openai-characterai); [Bloomberg — John Jumper moves from DeepMind to Anthropic](https://news.bloomberglaw.com/artificial-intelligence/nobel-winner-john-jumper-to-leave-google-deepmind-for-anthropic)

## Meta Superintelligence Labs

A functional leadership map is more defensible than treating a leaked four-pillar chart as a complete current HR hierarchy.

MSL sits within Meta. Public reporting identifies Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman as its leading executives. Meta’s investor transcript describes research, product, and infrastructure functions, with FAIR’s longer-term research distinguished within that structure.

[The Information — Meta Superintelligence Labs org chart](https://www.theinformation.com/org-charts/meta-generative-ai); [Meta — Q3 2025 follow-up earnings call: MSL structure](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2025/q3/META-Q3-2025-Follow-Up-Call-Transcript.pdf)

### Parent and MSL leadership

- **Mark Zuckerberg** — Meta founder and CEO. Primary source. [Meta — Q3 2025 follow-up earnings call: MSL structure](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2025/q3/META-Q3-2025-Follow-Up-Call-Transcript.pdf)
- **Alexandr Wang** — Chief AI Officer. Primary source. [Meta — Executive biographies](https://www.meta.com/media-gallery/)

### Research

- **Shengjia Zhao** — Chief Scientist. Primary source. [Meta — Q3 2025 follow-up earnings call: MSL structure](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2025/q3/META-Q3-2025-Follow-Up-Call-Transcript.pdf)
- **Rob Fergus** — FAIR, longer-term research. Primary source. [Meta — Q3 2025 follow-up earnings call: MSL structure](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2025/q3/META-Q3-2025-Follow-Up-Call-Transcript.pdf)
- **Luke Metz** — Research hire, August 2026. Reported. [The Next Web — Luke Metz joins Meta](https://thenextweb.com/news/luke-metz-meta-superintelligence-labs-openai)

### Products and infrastructure

- **Nat Friedman** — Product leadership. Primary source. [Meta — Q3 2025 follow-up earnings call: MSL structure](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2025/q3/META-Q3-2025-Follow-Up-Call-Transcript.pdf)
- **Aparna Ramani** — Infrastructure leadership. Primary source. [Meta — Q3 2025 follow-up earnings call: MSL structure](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2025/q3/META-Q3-2025-Follow-Up-Call-Transcript.pdf)

The deck’s “four pillars” can be reconciled with Meta’s three functional areas by separating frontier-model research and FAIR. Do not infer four equally independent divisions, current team sizes, or 30 current direct reports from a January chart. [Meta — Q3 2025 follow-up earnings call: MSL structure](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2025/q3/META-Q3-2025-Follow-Up-Call-Transcript.pdf); [The Information — Meta Superintelligence Labs org chart](https://www.theinformation.com/org-charts/meta-generative-ai)

Muse Spark launched on April 8, 2026. July brought the 1.1 update and expanded product capabilities. The original deck confused the initial model launch with a subsequent release. [Meta — Introducing Muse Spark](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/04/introducing-muse-spark-meta-superintelligence-labs/amp/); [Meta — Muse Spark 1.1 powers new Meta AI actions](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/07/meta-ai-muse-spark-doesnt-just-think-it-acts/)

LeCun’s AMI role belongs in the independent-lab section. The deck’s Daniel Gross remit and internal “TBD Lab” naming are not promoted here to a freshly verified September reporting chain. [AMI Labs — Team and research direction](https://amilabs.xyz/); [The Information — Meta Superintelligence Labs org chart](https://www.theinformation.com/org-charts/meta-generative-ai)

## Microsoft AI

Product and model responsibilities are separated, but the March memo deliberately keeps coordination and a dotted line.

Satya Nadella remains the parent-company CEO. Jacob Andreou leads the combined consumer and commercial Copilot experience; Mustafa Suleyman leads the superintelligence/model effort. Both report to Nadella.

[Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)

### Corporate leadership

- **Satya Nadella** — Chairman and CEO. Primary source. [Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)
- **Kevin Scott** — CTO. Primary source. [Microsoft — AI Decision Brief with CTO Kevin Scott](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-cloud/blog/2026/03/31/ai-decision-brief-how-leaders-can-drive-frontier-transformation/)

### Models and Copilot experience

- **Mustafa Suleyman** — EVP, CEO of Microsoft AI; superintelligence. Primary source. [Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)
- **Jacob Andreou** — EVP, Copilot. Primary source. [Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)

### M365 apps and Copilot platform

- **Ryan Roslansky** — Copilot leadership team. Primary source. [Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)
- **Perry Clarke** — Copilot leadership team. Primary source. [Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)
- **Charles Lamanna** — Copilot leadership team. Primary source. [Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)

Explicit relationship: Satya Nadella → Jacob Andreou + Mustafa Suleyman (Both directly report to Nadella). [Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)

Explicit relationship: Mustafa Suleyman → Jacob Andreou (Retained dotted-line relationship). [Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)

The memo groups Roslansky, Clarke, and Lamanna across M365 apps and the Copilot platform without assigning every subteam. Suleyman remains involved in operations and product strategy; “not the app” overstates the separation. [Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)

The cited Microsoft–OpenAI agreement was announced October 28, 2025, not November. It permits independent or third-party AGI development. Partnership rights are a separate question from Microsoft’s internal reporting lines. [Microsoft — New OpenAI partnership agreement](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2025/10/28/the-next-chapter-of-the-microsoft-openai-partnership/)

The deck’s 500–650-person MAI estimate is not a count of all Microsoft AI employees. The report omits unsupported team-size, Build-release-count, and weekly-review assertions. [Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)

## Safe Superintelligence

SSI’s own leadership update is more precise than “Daniel Levy still associated.”

The company’s announced focus is safe superintelligence as its sole product goal. That is a research and commercialization strategy, not evidence of a legal prohibition on intermediate products.

[SSI — Mission and product roadmap](https://ssi.inc/)

### Leadership

- **Ilya Sutskever** — CEO; technical team reports to him. Primary source. [SSI — Leadership and partnership updates](https://ssi.inc/updates)
- **Daniel Levy** — President. Primary source. [SSI — Leadership and partnership updates](https://ssi.inc/updates)

Explicit relationship: Ilya Sutskever → Technical team (Company-confirmed reporting line). [SSI — Leadership and partnership updates](https://ssi.inc/updates)

Daniel Gross ceased to be part of SSI on June 29, 2025. A July 2026 update confirms an NVIDIA partnership; the deck’s investment amount and valuation are not necessary to establish leadership and are omitted. [SSI — Leadership and partnership updates](https://ssi.inc/updates)

## Thinking Machines Lab

The active leadership includes both a chief scientist and a CTO.

Murati remains founder and CEO. Reporting identifies Murati and Schulman as the two remaining co-founders, not Schulman alone.

[The Information — Murati and Schulman remain at Thinking Machines](https://www.theinformation.com/briefings/thinking-machines-cofounder-return-openai)

### Leadership

- **Mira Murati** — Founder and CEO. Reported. [Built In — Thinking Machines leadership and milestones](https://builtin.com/articles/what-is-thinking-machines-lab)
- **John Schulman** — Co-founder and Chief Scientist. Reported. [Built In — Thinking Machines leadership and milestones](https://builtin.com/articles/what-is-thinking-machines-lab)
- **Soumith Chintala** — CTO, appointed January 2026. Reported. [Built In — Thinking Machines leadership and milestones](https://builtin.com/articles/what-is-thinking-machines-lab)

Tinker and Inkling are present on the company’s site. Weng’s July return to OpenAI is reported. Historical co-founder departures are not a substitute for a current list of who owns research and engineering. ## AMI Labs

LeCun supplies scientific and board leadership; LeBrun runs the company.

Alexandre LeBrun is CEO; Yann LeCun is chair. The launch team also includes research and operating specialists. The current company page additionally lists Min Lin, without an executive title.

The March 10 launch announcement confirms a $1.03 billion raise and operations across Paris, New York, Montreal, and Singapore. The thesis concerns learned world representations and planning; the report does not rank it against language-model labs. ## Discovery Loop

The lab has four named founders; its investor identifies Dean as CEO.

Google is a founding investor and Cloud partner; Discovery Loop is independent.

## DeepSeek

Founder visibility is stronger than public visibility into subordinate management.

Liang Wenfeng is the founder associated with High-Flyer. A detailed September employee hierarchy was not established in the reviewed sources.

The deck’s roughly 250-person figure is not carried forward as a current census. Its “not US-lab structured” description is replaced with the narrower observation that comparable reporting-line disclosure is limited. ## Mistral AI

A three-founder leadership structure spans company direction, research, and engineering.

The company identifies Mensch, Lample, and Lacroix as its founders. Reporting distinguishes the research and infrastructure/product responsibilities.

Mistral develops models as well as applications and infrastructure. Calling it merely an “application-layer challenger” understates its role. [Mistral — About the company and founders](https://mistral.ai/about/)

## Cohere

The current company roster separates AI, technology, commercial, finance, and people leadership.

Aidan Gomez is co-founder and CEO. Nick Frosst and Ivan Zhang are also listed as co-founders; founder status alone does not establish their current management remit.

[Cohere — Executive team](https://cohere.com/about)

Cohere builds foundation models and enterprise solutions. Its website’s open-science community size should not be confused with employee headcount. [Cohere — Executive team](https://cohere.com/about)

## Perplexity

Separate the product company from the model providers it uses.

The founding group comprises Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski. The available profiles do not establish a complete current employee hierarchy.

Perplexity combines models in a search and product experience. Shared founders, investors, or model suppliers should not be drawn as managerial reporting lines. [Forbes — Perplexity company profile](https://www.forbes.com/companies/perplexity/)

## NVIDIA: infrastructure and research

Jensen Huang is founder, president and CEO. Bill Dally is Chief Scientist and SVP of NVIDIA Research. The infrastructure sidebar should not imply an absence of research. ## Correction log

### Corrected · Slide 3, 11: Nick Turley — Head of ChatGPT

Turley moved to enterprise; Alexander took consumer products. Brockman’s product remit dates to May. [WIRED — Brockman takes control of OpenAI products](https://www.wired.com/story/openai-reorg-greg-brockman-product/)

### Clarified · Slide 3, 11: One undifferentiated OpenAI board; nonprofit board + Altman “holds the vote”

Separate Foundation and Group boards. Foundation appointment rights control the Group; Kolter is a non-voting Group observer. July appointments add Vélez and Vince. [OpenAI — Our structure](https://openai.com/our-structure/); [OpenAI — David Vélez and Robin Vince join both boards](https://openai.com/index/david-velez-robin-vince-join-openai-boards/)

### Corrected · Slide 4: Jason Matheny and Paul Christiano are current Trust members

Matheny left in December 2023; Christiano in April 2024. Cuéllar also left the Trust to take his August 2026 operating role. [Anthropic — Long-Term Benefit Trust, including membership footnotes](https://www.anthropic.com/news/the-long-term-benefit-trust); [Anthropic — Tino Cuéllar joins global affairs, leaves Trust](https://www.anthropic.com/news/tino-cuellar)

### Corrected · Slide 4, 11: Board and LTBT membership combined

The Trust and corporate board are distinct. Trust-appointed directors already constituted a board majority in April 2026. [Anthropic — Narasimhan appointment; Trust-appointed board majority](https://www.anthropic.com/news/narasimhan-board)

### Qualified · Slide 4: All seven co-founders; Ben Mann also listed as co-founder

The deck’s own list contains eight named co-founders when Mann is included. The current leadership page and Labs announcement do not resolve a uniform founder-count convention; remove the absolute count. [Anthropic — Leadership](https://www.anthropic.com/company/leadership); [Anthropic — Introducing Labs](https://www.anthropic.com/news/introducing-anthropic-labs)

### Qualified · Slide 4, 11: Dario has exactly one direct report; everyone else reports to Daniela

Company-confirmed wording is that Daniela manages the executive team. The exact single-direct-report assertion was not independently substantiated. [Anthropic — Leadership](https://www.anthropic.com/company/leadership)

### Clarified · Slide 5, 11: SpaceX, xAI and Tesla leaders shown as one hierarchy

Show SpaceX ownership and corporate officers, then the reported AI operating role. Do not turn cross-company collaboration into an employee reporting chain. [SpaceX — June 5 European prospectus](https://content.spacex.com/cms-assets/FINAL_Documents%20and%20Updates/SpaceX%20-%20EU%20Prospectus%20%28Approved%20by%20Bafin%29%20-%20June%205%2C%202026.pdf); [Benzinga — SpaceX operators join xAI oversight (Bloomberg reporting)](https://www.benzinga.com/markets/prediction-markets/26/05/52701303/elon-musks-raid-why-tesla-lieutenants-are-shuffling-to-xai)

### Confirmed · Slide 6: Hassabis chair / Kavukcuoglu operating leader

The August memo confirms this split; Kavukcuoglu is SVP. [Google — The next chapter of our AI momentum](https://blog.google/company-news/inside-google/message-ceo/next-chapter-ai-momentum/)

### Corrected · Slide 7: Muse Spark first shipped July 2026

Initial launch was April 8. July included Muse Spark 1.1 and expanded product capabilities. [Meta — Introducing Muse Spark](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/04/introducing-muse-spark-meta-superintelligence-labs/amp/); [Meta — Muse Spark 1.1 powers new Meta AI actions](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/07/meta-ai-muse-spark-doesnt-just-think-it-acts/)

### Qualified · Slide 7: Four equally distinct MSL pillars and ~30 current Wang direct reports

Meta describes three functional areas, distinguishing FAIR within research. The January chart cannot establish a September direct-report count. [Meta — Q3 2025 follow-up earnings call: MSL structure](https://s21.q4cdn.com/399680738/files/doc_financials/2025/q3/META-Q3-2025-Follow-Up-Call-Transcript.pdf); [The Information — Meta Superintelligence Labs org chart](https://www.theinformation.com/org-charts/meta-generative-ai)

### Corrected · Slide 8: Suleyman runs models, “not the app”

Andreou reports to Nadella but retains a dotted line to Suleyman, who stays involved in product strategy and operations. [Microsoft — Copilot leadership update](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2026/03/17/announcing-copilot-leadership-update/)

### Corrected · Slide 8: OpenAI agreement changed in November 2025

The referenced new agreement was announced October 28, 2025. [Microsoft — New OpenAI partnership agreement](https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2025/10/28/the-next-chapter-of-the-microsoft-openai-partnership/)

### Corrected · Slide 9: Daniel Levy merely “still associated” with SSI

SSI explicitly names Levy President, with Sutskever CEO and the technical team reporting to Sutskever. [SSI — Leadership and partnership updates](https://ssi.inc/updates)

### Corrected · Slide 9: John Schulman is the last original TML co-founder still in

Murati also remains. Add CTO Soumith Chintala; the source deck omitted that operating role. [Built In — Thinking Machines leadership and milestones](https://builtin.com/articles/what-is-thinking-machines-lab)

### Updated · Slide 9, 10: Weng left TML; destination omitted

July reporting also identifies her return to OpenAI. [The Next Web — Lilian Weng returns to OpenAI](https://thenextweb.com/news/lilian-weng-thinking-machines-openai-recursive-self-improvement)

### Expanded · Slide 9: AMI is represented chiefly by LeCun

Add CEO Alexandre LeBrun and the named technical leadership; distinguish LeCun’s chair role. [Le Monde — AMI leadership and launch](https://www.lemonde.fr/en/economy/article/2026/03/10/yann-le-cun-raises-900-million-for-his-france-based-ai-start-up_6751277_19.html)

### Expanded · Slide 9: Discovery Loop founders without operating titles

Investor Radical Ventures identifies Jeff Dean as CEO. Other founders’ specific titles remain unspecified. [Radical Ventures — Discovery Loop leadership](https://radical.vc/portfolio/discovery-loop/)

### Held out · Slide 2, 9, 12: Cross-lab headcounts, valuation estimates and IPO dates

Mixed dates and definitions prevent a comparable census. Funding rumors and IPO timing forecasts are excluded from this leadership report rather than presented as settled facts.

### Held out · Slide 3–10: Unverified fine-grained remits and subteam ownership

Aditya Ramesh’s “Worldism” title, Karpathy’s exact manager, certain SpaceX-adjacent roles, Daniel Gross’s precise current Meta remit, and asserted counts of people or releases require stronger current sourcing.

### Refined · Slide 9, 10: Mistral and Cohere are application-layer challengers; “same ~30 people”

Both companies develop models. Replace the unsupported talent-pool count with named, dated movements and avoid treating prior employers as direct transfer paths. [Mistral — About the company and founders](https://mistral.ai/about/); [Cohere — Executive team](https://cohere.com/about)

## Method and limitations

Cutoff: September 5, 2026. Company statements, filings and executive memos take priority, followed by identified reporting. Older announcements establish appointments, not a guarantee of continued tenure. No internal HR records were accessed. Paywalled charts were not treated as fully inspected. Omission does not imply departure. Headcounts, speculative valuations, IPO forecasts and unpublished reporting chains are excluded. “Held out” means insufficient evidence for publication, not proven false. Company selection follows the supplied deck and is not a global ranking. Operating-model descriptions are editorial synthesis.
